How Young Is Too Young To Weight Train?

IMG_0572A lot of parents are often reluctant to start their children on a weight training program.  Often this stems from the fear that weight training will affect a child’s growth plate hindering their growth.  So the most common questions that parents ask me are, “Is it safe for my child to lift weights and if so, what age is appropriate for them to start?”

Before answering this question it is important for parents to understand the difference between strength training and weight lifting.  Strength training is the practice of adding resistance to the muscles to build strength and endurance through the use of free weights, machines, body weight or resistance.  This should not be confused with weight lifting or body building, which incorporates the use of using heavy weights with a focus on building bigger muscles.  For children, there are many benefits to strength training.  It can help strengthen children’s bones and joints reducing sports related injuries.  It can build muscle strength and endurance to improve overall fitness and performance levels.  It promotes healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels by maintaining a healthy weight.  Strength training can also boost a child’s self esteem and improve their self image.  As long as adolescents are interested in building their strength and can follow directions, they can participate in a strength training program.  In general, a child can safely train with weights at the same age that they are ready to participate in organized sports or physical activities.  The most important things to take into consideration before your child engages in a strength training program is choosing a qualified, trained professional who can teach proper technique, provide adequate supervision and has experience working with adolescents.  For more information on health and fitness or hiring a personal trainer, contact us.
